The arrest stemmed from an incident on Friday, Aug. 18, when the Putnam County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) responded to a call from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police regarding a golfer beating a Canada Goose to death.
According to the Putnam County SPCA, the incident happened at the Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac at 187 Hill St., where Law Enforcement Division Detectives met with DEC Police to interview staff and witnesses about the goose's death.
Witnesses at the course told authorities that a Canada Goose had been hit by a golf ball which caused it to appear dazed. A golfer on the fourteenth hole then allegedly struck the goose several times with his club before walking away.
After this, the golfer then noticed that the goose was still moving and proceeded to return to hit the bird again, SPCA officials said.
After witnesses helped identify the suspect, Carmel resident Enrico Sarli, authorities charged him with one count of animal cruelty. Additionally, DEC Police also issued Sarli a summons for his violation under the Department of Environmental Conservation Law.
Sarli will be arraigned in the Town of Carmel Court on Tuesday, Sept. 12.
